RELATIONSHIP TO WORK
Below you will find four phrases that describe ways of relating to work. Please indicate how much you identify which each one of the paragraphs:
CASE A
Person A works mainly to earn enough money and to sustain him or herself outside of work life. If they did not need money they would quit their current job and do something else instead. Work for them is basically a necessity of life, like breathing or sleeping. They often wish that time went by faster during the workday. They very much look forward to weekends and holidays. If they could live life over again, they would probably not have the same job. They would not encourage their children or friends to enter the same line of work. They are very anxious to retire.
CASE B
Person B basically enjoys their work, but does not foresee staying at their current job for longer than five years. Their plan is to move on to a higher-level job. They have numerous goals for the future related to the positions that they will eventually hold. Sometimes their work seems like a waste of time, but they know the importance of doing their best in their current role in order to continue progressing. They aspire to getting a promotion. They seek success by competing with their work colleagues.
CASE C
Person C’s work is one of the most important parts of their life. They are very contented with their profession. How they earn money is a vital part of who they are, and this is one of the first things that others say about them. They tend to take work home with them and on vacations as well. Most of their friends are work colleagues, and they belong to various organizations and clubs related to their work. They are happy with their work because they love it, and because they believe that it makes the world a better place. They would encourage their children and friends to enter the same profession. Person C would be quite upset if they were forced to leave their job. They are not particularly anxious to retire.
CASE D
Person D has children or older family members in their care. Their partner’s income would not be sufficient to meet their living and education costs if they did not also work. They have a good job outside the home and they enjoy it. They do their best to care for their home and family and to make this compatible with their work. Sometimes they find it demanding to meet their obligations, but they think it is worth it to try to balance these important aspects of their life. They would encourage their children and friends to balance care of their home with professional work outside the home.
RELATION TO HOUSEHOLD TASKS
Below you will find four phrases that describe ways of relating to the work of the home. Please indicate how much you identify which each one of the paragraphs.
Person A works as a homemaker because they did not have the opportunity to receive training and find a job outside the home. If they had the choice, they would prefer to do something else. Housework is basically a necessity of life for them, like breathing or sleeping. They find household tasks routine and boring, but they don’t have enough training to work outside the home. They often wish that time spent on housework would go by more quickly, and that their children would grow up so that they could gain more independence. If they could live their life over again, they would probably not work full time in the home. They would not encourage their children or friends to work full-time as homemakers.
Person B basically enjoys homemaking, but they hope not to spend much longer in this role. Their plan is to dedicate themself full time to the home during the first years of their children’s lives and then take up paid employment outside the home. They do not seek out training for household tasks because they don’t find this necessary. Their aspiration is to find a job outside the home as soon as the necessary conditions are in place. Though they find homemaking important, they don’t see it as a strong priority in their life, especially if it can be done by someone else. They would encourage their children and friends to dedicate themselves only part-time to homemaking, focusing rather on their professional development.
Homemaking is one of the most important parts of person C’s life. They are very happy dedicating themselves to homemaking tasks and they seek out opportunity to receive further training. Dedicating themselves full-time to the home is a vital part of who they are, and this is one of the first things that people say about them. Though sometimes they see household tasks to be a sacrifice, they enjoy what they do and think that the best use of their time is: taking care of their home and the people that they love. They see housework as a service to other family members and an opportunity to develop skills for their own lives and those of their children. They are proud to work full-time as a homemaker and they often tell their friends this. They feel good about their work because they love it and because they think it makes the world a better place. They would encourage their friends and children to become professional homemakers.
